EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
