Our Top Record of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Place.

On the surface, this work might appear more like a difficult university examination than a new popular music record by an artist who just had a last single was a collaboration with an international pop star. Broken into 4 separate parts and performed in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning symphonic album that delves into female mystery, religious transcendence, and physical change, frequently through the prism of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—is launched upwards here, buoyed by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone renders the work of other pop stars look rather modest.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to transcend dry academic posturing is almost miraculous, with full credit going to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to blend the past and the present, its scale are far higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that really raises her fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of joy. Similar to the legendary Björk during her height, there is a captivating sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts apart, you still want to be right there through the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This playful energy shines brightly during the stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several moments. Then, everything falls away, and there's a gleeful giggle and a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes down like cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album lies in you never quite understand—or even wish to know—where you will go to next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally different place from how it started. A track explores the transient trappings of celebrity over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic style begins out moody and brooding, featuring menacing beats, until sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus arrive to soften the song's rough corners.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album involves navigating the gap of bold innovation and broad accessibility. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. A song performed entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that seems to gather increasingly nagging hooks as it spins skyward. That trick is echoed by a different powerful ballad that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a painted-on smile, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of impending artificial blankness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its built-in excess. This is a deep source of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but never feels like hard work. Where other big pop albums of the year felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish feast where the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
